The Highland Pond Preserve is one of Middlesex Land Trust’s “Signature Preserves” and hosts a section of the National Scenic New England Blue Trail. The preserve is located in the northern section of Middletown and is accessible from either Bell Street or Atkins Street off Country Club Road. The Highland Pond Preserve contains a portion of the New England Trail, a national scenic trail established in 2009 from existing trails in Connecticut and Massachusetts. The portion of the New England Trail running through the Highland Pond Preserve is historically known as the Mattabesett Trail.
