The Middlesex Land Trust’s 2025 Hike Series continued on May 17, 2025, with a trip to the Upper Pine Brook Preserve in East Hampton. We began via a steep trail down into the preserve (picture: Starting off). Almost immediately, we saw Pine Brook, which is a healthy and fast-flowing tributary of Salmon River (picture: Pine Brook). We ran into lots of fungi – including this healthy specimen (picture: Mushroom).

Hike leader Larry pointed out notable features, like built-up walls on either side of the brook – most likely used for milling and related water-powered work. (picture: River walls). We also found what appeared to be the basement of a small building (picture: Basement).

All in all, a pleasant way to spend a Saturday morning!
